Why Scripts?

Sample Script

  • It usually takes many runs of Ancestral Author to get the PDF document exactly to your liking. Scripts eliminate the need to repeatedly type the information. This is especially true if you are working on more than one document at a time. You can switch between two different scripts for two different documents without having to re-enter information.

  • Scripts make it easy to update your document after you've updated your genealogy. Just produce a new GEDCOM and rerun the script.

  • It's sometimes easier to use Notepad (or another text editor) to edit a script than it is to run the Ancestral Author wizard. Suppose you've produced a document with ten chapters, and you want to delete a chapter at the beginning of the document. The Ancestral Author wizard does not handle this situation well; there is no facility for deleting chapters in the middle of the document. With Notepad, you can just delete script statements for the chapter. For example, to delete the chapter entitled "The Great Sickness", just delete the blue lines in the sample script shown in the next column.
